Book Review: The Fault In Our Stars

The novel The Fault In Our Stars, written by award-winning author, John Green, is about the life of a 16 year-old cancer patient Hazel Grace Lancaster. Now, before someone decides not to read The Fault In Our Stars because it will be “too sad,” they should know that this novel is  extremely inspiring and humorous. It is definitely sad, but The Fault In Our Stars is so much more than just a “cancer book.” There were times when I was laughing so hard my parents asked if I needed help, and there were times where I cried enough to fill a bathtub.

The romance between Hazel and Augustus was so beautiful and real that the reader could not help but get sucked into the story. Unlike many teen romance novels, Hazel and Gus’ relationship evolved slow enough to where the story was very believable. They supported each other through all that they were put through. Another thing I liked about this was the fact that Green’s characterization was spot on to the character’s personality . Hazel and Gus weren’t depressed or angry; they were enjoying what they were doing in that moment and dealing with the cards they had been dealt, which is admirable to anyone reading the story.

Overall, I enjoyed The Fault In Our Stars immensely. It was, without a doubt, one of the greatest books I have ever read. It teaches the reader to enjoy their life to the fullest, and to not be afraid of things they want to do. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a book beyond a typical light read, and anyone who has read a book written by John Green. If you are looking for books with a similar tone, I would suggest The Catastrophic History of You and Me, by Jess Rothenberg. The Fault In Our Stars is also being made in to a movie, which will be released in June 2014. But, as always, the book will be better than the movie. Read the book first, I promise you will not regret it.
