“Being on the court and playing it’s like a rush, all the adrenaline hits you at once,” said Maynard.
Colby Maynard, senior, has had this rush of playing basketball since the third grade when he started playing in a catholic league. Maynard also has a problem that affects him on and off the court. Maynard is half deaf.
“It bothers me not being able to hear everything around me.”
said Maynard.
Still, that has not stopped Maynard from being the best player he can be. What makes Maynard the best player he can be?
“My coaches and my mother,” said Maynard.
Maynard has been working and playing basketball since the third grade and is now a starting key player. Maynard is mostly grabbing rebounds and blocking shots at the power forward position.

“I feel pretty comfortable in my position.” said Maynard
Last year, Maynard was second in state for blocks, fifth in state for rebounding and led his team in points while playing for Bayless. Bayless is a class four team, while Mehlville is class a class six. This means there will be more competition for Maynard.
”I just need to adapt and work harder to compete, but I feel confident in my abilities,”said Maynard.
Maynard works harder by waking up extra early and usually gets to school by six in the morning just to shoot and do some extra drills because he is usually busy after school. Maynard is inspired by his father, college players and all the NBA(National Basketball Association). Before a game, Maynard does lunges to stretch out his legs. He also says a prayer before each game.
“This year what I would like to accomplish more wins for Mehlville because their basketball reputation hasn’t been the greatest the last few years,” said Maynard.
Maynard is looking forward to districts to show how hard him and the team worked this year.
“You see everything so fast, it’s just a thrill to play and get better.” said Maynard.
Maynard plans on going to college and continuing his dream of playing at Missouri Baptist University.
