Early in the morning, while everyone struggles to get out of bed, the basketball team works hard to cram in a practice before school starts. With winter coming around the corner, the team gears up for another season. Although the team accomplished many of their goals last season, they’re shooting for even more success this year.

Last year, the boys went 11-14. The team was especially proud of the Oakville game, which they won 74-68. Unfortunately, they came up short when they met their rivals again in the first round of districts. The team faced a devastating loss which cut their district run short.

This year, the team hopes to take the district trophy home. The athletes have been working hard during the offseason to reach this goal. The offseason started a few weeks after districts ended last year, and stayed consistent until tryouts week.

“Our off-season consisted of lots of weight-lifting, agility/speed sessions, and individual skill work.” said Bekir Crncevic, senior point guard.

One advantage the team has over other schools is speed. This was a trait that helped the team last year as well. The intensity that Mehlville keeps throughout a game keeps the fans interested.

“Our team strengths this year is our speed. We have a lot of quick guys which will benefit the way we are trying to play,” said Crncevic

All the coaches, teammates, and fans are excited to get the season going.

“Our team spirit is very good. We all have the right attitude, and we are all pushing each other to be better,” said Doraine Adams, senior guard.

The first game of the season is against Affton on November 28th, as Mehlville hosts the annual Southside Classic Tournament.  Although Oakville and Lindbergh are the clear rivals at the moment, the team puts on a show every game. Come support the team this season, and watch them work towards the district finals.
