With competition season picking up speed, the Mehlville Majorettes are looking back at their past competitions in preparation for this year.
The majorettes, composed of juniors Lilly Burch and Amila Filipovic, sophomore Aurora Hawkins, and freshman Nora Howard, show their abilities at many football, soccer, and basketball games every year. The squad also performs at pep rallies and other school events.
Junior Amila Filipovic reflects on her experience as a twirler during competitions.
“Competition season was interesting. Between not being able to compete with one of my best friends on the team and adding the new freshman it was interesting,” Filipovic said.
National season can get emotional when saying goodbye to the year’s seniors. The Majorettes lost four seniors last year including Emma Hemmelgarn, Paige Kilper, Line Captain Alania Phillips and Captain and Feature Twirler, Kyleigh McCourt.
Phillips and McCourt, joined by Burch, Filipovic, Hawkins, and Howard, continued their performances for Nationals.

Last year the Majorettes performed two routines, “Six”, based on the Musical Six, as their Dance Twirl, and “Barbie”, based on the many Barbie movies, as their Halftime with props.
At their first and smallest competition, the team Placed first in both categories and currently hold the titles as the Missouri State Dance Twirl and Halftime Champions.
Then at the Midwest Regional competition in Illinois the team placed second in Dance Twirl, “Six”, and first with their Halftime,”Barbie.”
The majorettes closed out the season at nationals where they took fifth in their Dance Twirl, while becoming Halftime National champions, winning first in with “Barbie.”
The team kicked off their 2025 competition season with a first place win in their dance twirl Rio and a 3rd place finish in their halftime BO$$! Updates for future competitions can be found on their Instagram page: @mhs_majorettes for future competitions.
