Tom Harper is a man of many talents, whether it be teaching, coaching or parenting. He is known around the building for many things. He’s an English teacher for some, a soccer coach for others, and a basketball coach for some more.
Harper shares his favorite part of teaching.
“The diversity of all my students, and how no day is ever the same, is my favorite part,” Harper said.
On top of teaching, Harper is an assistant coach for both the varsity boys soccer team and varsity girls basketball team. And for him, seeing athletes take their talents to the next level, is exciting.
“Seeing my players go places outside of high school, knowing I had something to do with that, is the best part,” Harper said.
In his free time, Harper enjoys relaxing at home.
“Now that both kids are out of the house, there’s a lot of peace and quiet at home.”
Harper has been in the building for all 25 years of his teaching career, not to mention his years here as a student, as Harper is a Mehlville alumni.
With retirement in his future, Harper shares his ideas about the next chapter.
“I haven’t really thought about what I’m gonna do when I retire, but I know I’m looking forward to it.”
The summer is Harper’s only off-season, and during this time, he spends time with family travelling.
“This summer, we went to Mexico for a family trip. Summer is the only time we can go, as my kid and I’s schedules are very conflicting.”
Harper continues to be an influential role model for his students, and embodies school spirit daily at the high school.
