On November 13 Student Council along with the Red Cross sponsored a blood drive at Mehlville High School. This blood drive allowed students and staff to donate their blood to those in need.
“Not many people know that one donation of blood can save up to three lives.People need blood. So student council took it upon ourselves to organize this opportunity for Mehlville to give back to the community,” said Brendan Heinkel, student council president.
According to redcrossblood.org adults have an average of 10 to 12 pints of blood in their body and by donating just one pint of your blood to the Red Cross you could save up to three lives. With over that 70 people donated their blood during Mehlville’s blood drive, potentially saving up to 210 lives.
Nervousness and anxiety is a common fear that many students have when giving blood.
“It was my second time ever giving, and I’d recommend it to anyone. It may be slightly nerve wracking, but it’s painless, easy, and makes you feel great after knowing you saved someones life,” said Heinkel.
If you are still wanting to give blood but missed your chance, student council will be sponsoring another blood drive in the spring. You can also visit redcrossblood.org for more information on where to give blood in your local area.
