When walking into Ronnie’s to see Lincoln the only thing my heart was set on was getting the extra credit for my American History class. However, I was pleasantly surprised.
As expected Steven Spielberg nailed it. Lincoln was an incredible representation of the president’s second term.
Not only did the film include the struggles President Lincoln faced in getting the 13th Amendment passed but also his home life and the effects he had on the war and the American people.
The best part of this movie was the casting. There were many actors and actresses throughout this movie that brought these historical figures to life perfectly.
I cannot think of an individual who would have played our 16th president better than Daniel Day-Lewis. Day-Lewis looking identical to that of the president on screen, conveyed Lincoln’s charisma and devotion to the people as mentioned in history books.
While discussing the serious topic of slavery Tommy Lee Jones, who played Thaddeus Stevens, brought laughter to the crowd with the deliverance of many snide remarks towards democrats who were against passing the bill.
Another smart casting decision was seen in that of Sally Field who played Mary Tod Lincoln. Field not only depicted the loving and caring side of Mrs. Lincoln both as a mother and a wife but also the stresses that come along with being married to such a powerful and influential man.
All in all Lincoln was both and inspirational and informational movie with a great director and cast. Receiving 4.5 out of five it was significantly more enjoyable than your typical historical film.
