Most viewers who went to see The Fault in Our Stars were in attendance because they had read the novel by John Green. The captivating love story between the two main characters, Hazel and Gus, is one that leaves readers speechless. When found that both these characters have faced struggles with cancer at some point throughout their life, their love becomes that much more meaningful. Hazel and Gus, played by Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, are very likeable and relatable characters. This is why so many readers often sympathize with them so easily. You not only fall in love with their story, but also the characters themselves.
Personally, I could not put the book down. Therefore, I saw the movie as soon as it was released and it did not disappoint. My makeup was halfway down my cheeks and my shirt was soaked from wiping away tears by the time the credits began to roll. Although the movie can be seen as predictable and non-entertaining by people who are not into romantic chick-flicks, I loved it. The movie not only did a wonderful job of following the book, but the characters in the movie also did a wonderful job of portraying the emotions and feelings as families and relationships undergo the hardships of cancer.
However, as much as the movie and book both made me cry, I also learned some valuable lessons from John Green’s tragic story. Hazel and Gus teach readers to live each day to the fullest and to not take the little things for granted. Also, I think a very good lesson can be taught to not judge people before you know them. First impressions can be pretty harsh sometimes without knowing what the person is dealing with underneath. I applaud all the people who worked hard to make this movie a reality, and I hope everyone has the chance to experience the love that Hazel and Gus bring to the screen.
