With a day full of classes, students look for some sort of relief from stress and homework: lunch. During lunch, students are able to communicate among others, refuel their bodies and relax. But the problem is, since Mehlville has such a big student body, there’s almost no place to receive privacy. A simple solution to this problem would help students have a quiet place to study, less crowded lunch room and a place to relax and take a breather. About 75% of teens have too much stress; it results in fights and naps during class. It’s proven that fresh air helps students physically, emotionally and mentally. Sitting outside for lunch doesn’t seem like a big solution, but you would be surprised what fresh air does for students.
“A bunch of smelly teens in a closed room eating doesn’t sound very appetizing,” said Steve Page, Mehlville graduate.
And it’s the truth.
“I feel like I’m always breathing someone else’s air in the lunch room, and that can’t be healthy,” said Vincenzo Chirco, senior.
With flu season here, it would be beneficial for everyone, including students and staff.
Despite the fact that students need fresh air, the Healthy Hunger-Free Kid bill Michelle Obama purposed has students falling asleep during class. But why?
“Teens now need to have some sugar to get them through the day. If we were able to leave school, we could get a soda or a sugary snack. Or, we could have our parents make us something and go pick it up. Teacher don’t realize, but that’s the reason why we are falling asleep in class,” said Chirco.
Well, of course, there are students that would ruin it for everyone by skipping class or causing trouble. Depending on your GPA and attendance, leaving school for lunch could be looked as an incentive. It would encourage students to go to school and raise their GPA.
“If raising my grades and attendance meant I could leave school to get lunch, I would definitely make sure I got my homework done every day,” said Chirco.
After waking up before the crack of dawn and being trapped in-between these school walls all day, a bit a fresh air could help our student body. Also, leaving for lunch could be an encouragement for students to do better in school.
