Tuesday, February 7 the Mehlville Panthers junior varsity and varsity basketball teams will take on the Oakville Tigers in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer basketball games.
For the past few years, the Mehlville School District high school basketball teams have participated in Coaches vs. Cancer. Both Mehlville and Oakville High School work together to raise money for the American Cancer Society, including special Coaches vs. Cancer t-shirt sales and donations.
The varsity girls will play with a pink ball that will be auctioned off after the game. All proceeds from the auction will go to cancer research.
This year, both high schools are creating a pink wall plaque to honor those who have fought cancer. The plaques are simple memoirs to take the time to honor our loved ones who have fought the toughest battle of their lives.
“Coaches vs. Cancer is a tradition that was started at the college level and worked its way to high school. Now every team in our conference participates,” said Andy Guethle, Mehlville physical education department chair and varsity boys coach.
“It’s a neat opportunity to help raise money for cancer.”
Junior varsity girls will play at 4 PM in Gym B, junior varsity boys at 5:30 PM in Gym B, varsity girls at 5:30 PM in Gym A, and varsity boys at 7 PM in Gym A at Oakville Senior High School.
