Learning about sustainability is key to reducing our impact on our planet. Where to start? Mehlville’s Environmental Sustainability Club.
The ESC has been around for four years, and Stephen Klobe has been the sponsor of it for all four years. When asked about what the ESC does, Klobe said, “we mostly try to help kids find ways to reduce their waste.” All meetings are held in Klobe’s classroom in room 224 on the third Wednesday of each month.
Along with helping students learn about sustainability individually, the club also helps out around the school. Klobe said the biggest thing the ESC does is a monthly cleanup where the club cleans up Mehlville, or other schools in the district.
A goal for members in the ESC this year is to make a garden in the outdoor area behind Klobe’s classroom, with both plants and vegetables.
What kind of people should join the Environmental Sustainability Club? Klobe said, “Anybody. Anybody who wants to put in some effort to help make the Earth a better and cleaner place.”
