The Homecoming football game against Parkway South last week was one full of excitement and will not be forgotten by those who witnessed it.

The Panthers took the field Friday, ready for a third straight win after beating Fox and Marquette two weeks before, but they had a tough opponent in the Parkway South Patriots.

Mehlville made the first score after a 55-yard interception return from junior Matt Mik, but their extra point attempt was blocked. Parkway South retaliated with three straight scores, a 2-yard TD run by quarterback Eli Erickson, a 21-yard field goal kick from Luke Bakula, and then a 12-yard TD catch by junior running-back Eddie Morris, which put the score at 17-6.

Mehlville got the last score of the first half, a 6-yard TD run by quarterback Brendan Moore. However, the Panthers failed on a 2-point conversion, so the score at half was 17-12.

It looked as if the Patriots had the game won after a 12-yard TD run from Morris gave them a 24-12 lead, but the Panthers came to play in the 4th.

The Panthers kicked off the final quarter with a huge 66-yard TD catch by senior receiver Kyle Bean. Parkway South got 3 points on the board soon after, with another 21-yard field goal kick by Bakula.

Mehlville would take a 34-27 lead after two straight TD runs by Moore, a short 6-yard run and a long 33-yard run. Parkway South then sent it into overtime, scoring in the final seconds of the game with a TD catch by Keenan Borders.

The Patriots started with the ball in OT, but the Panthers defense held them to a missed field goal attempt.

After making a huge stop on defense, the Panthers quickly drove through the Patriots defense. Mehlville ended the game, 40-34, with a 6-yard TD run by junior running-back Mike Mik. Shortly after, The Green Pit stormed onto the field to congratulate their team.

“Running onto the field was a special moment for me. I’ll never forget it,” senior Ben Allen said.

The varsity football team is now 3-3. This Friday they will play the Oakville Tigers, who also have a record of 3-3.
