Red Ribbon Week.

One of the largest and oldest drug prevention campaigns in the United States. The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to have communities and individuals take a stand against drugs, and to promote drug prevention, with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America.

The campaign was also started to commemorate DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who died in Mexico in 1985, while fighting with drug traffickers to keep drugs out of the country.

Red Ribbon week is a national celebration that usually takes place the last full week of October.

This year, Paw’s and Peace is helping promote a drug free community by creating spirit days for people to acknowledge and represent that they desire a drug free environment.

“It allows students to participate and have fun dressing up as a form of acknowledgement of those who live drug-free lives,” said Officer Charlie Rodriguez, sponsor of Paw’s and Peace.

The Spirit days are as follows;

Mon. 28: Red Ribbon Week, Wear Cardinal Red

Tues. 29: Twin Day, twin your better half who is drug free

Wed. 30: Drug Your Boots Away, wear your western wear.

Thurs. 31: Hunt the Drugs away, wear your camouflage.

Friday Nov. 1: Green Out Day, Don’t be a Dope, Promote true MHS Green.

Paw’s and Peace also plans on hosting other events to help better the school and community.

This year they also plan on hosting many sporting events to raise money.  They will have a  basketball tournament for students to a benefit a charity or cause that is still to be determined.

Later on they hope to have a soccer tournament to help generate funds for Paw’s and Peace to be able to give back to the school.

“Paw’s and Peace is always looking for any opportunity to lend a hand,” said Officer Rodriguez.

Paw’s and Peace has many events planned. For ways to help and for more information contact Officer Rodriguez in the main office.
