12 New Classes in 2012

AP French Language and Culture
This class gives students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the French people and culture. The year-long class covers various themes of our world. It is offered to students who have successfully completed French IV and wish to obtain an in-depth knowledge of proper French rhetoric.
AP English Language and Composition
This preparatory course will help students further their reading and writing skills. Students will study and work on a variety of essays for different purposes. This class allows students to analyze fiction and nonfiction pieces, as well as enhance their vocabulary. It is offered to students who have successfully completed English I and English II.
AP English Literature and Composition
In this preparatory course students will learn about different types of prose and understand the importance of actively reading. Students will be required to write various types of compositions to advance their writing skills. While reading, students must create new ideas based on evidence from the context. This course is offered to students who have successfully completed English I and English II.
Principles of Biomedical Sciences
This interactive course allows students to explore the human body systems and research different types of medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, etc. Throughout the course, students are given the opportunity to work together to formulate conclusions that lead to the death of a fictional being. This course will be especially interesting to students intending to pursue medicine. It is open to students in all grade levels.
AP Human Geography
This Social Studies course shows students different patterns and processes that aided in the shaping of geography. Students will be able to understand how Earth’s surface has evolved through the years. They also learn how to analyze human social organization and how environmental factors play such an important role in area population. This class is open to students in all grade levels upon recommendation of previous teacher.
Culinary Arts Pro Start I
This course beyond regular foods classes in the sense that it introduces students to the professional world of cooking and kitchen safety/sanitation. Since it is a year-long class, it is intended for those students who are seriously considering a future in the foodservice industry. It is open to students in grades 10, 11, and 12.
Culinary Arts Pro Start II
This class builds on the first class, but goes further in incorporating management skills and specific techniques relating to the industry. Students will study specific meals, nutritional content, cost effectiveness and more. They will also learn how to prepare foods from different regions of the world, including Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Asia. It is open to students in grades 10, 11, and 12.
Engineering Design and Development
This class is open to all seniors enrolled in the 4-year PLTW engineering program. This course specifically allows students to work in teams to develop solutions to a variety of technical problems in the design process. Once a solution is developed, it must be tested to ensure quality. This class forces students to think critically about in-depth research. Working in groups allows students to better their organizational and communication skills.
Social Media Marketing
This one-semester class heavily focuses on internet technology in the media. It will inform students of techniques and strategies businesses use to promote their product/service through social media platforms. Students will explore advertising and marketing methods on sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and more. Beyond social networking, it goes into mobile coupons and video sharing. This class will help students gain a basic understanding of marketing through online media. It is offered to students in grades 11 and 12.
Introduction to Game Programming
In this one-semester course, students interested in computer programming will explore the basics of the field. This project-based class gives students a chance to learn about tools and resources that will allow them to develop computer animations. Students will basically create a 3-D virtual world while blending old techniques with modern styles. It is offered to students who have successfully completed Introduction to Programming and Literacy.
Introduction to Sports Medicine
This one-semester course will help students gain a better understanding of sports related injuries and how to treat them. It focuses on rehabilitation, emergency procedures, first aid and CPR, and fitness conditioning and strength programs. There will be a $25 fee for CPR certification. This course will especially be beneficial to students who wish to pursue careers in sports medicine. It is offered to students in grades 10, 11, and 12.
Understanding Law
This one-semester course allows students to better understand the current legal process and how it affects their lives. Students will focus on several areas of law including employment law, bankruptcy law, family law, and estate law. They will also review the relationship between the law and the Constitution of the United States. Students interested in pursuing legal careers should take advantage of this informative course. It is open to students in grades 11 and 12.
