Faith In Music

Music is a form of expression. It can be used to express many things. Counselor David Pitts uses music to help express religion.

Eight years ago, Pitts helped start a church with his dad who is the pastor. ROC Ministries of Mehlville is where Pitts puts his musical talents on display.

“I play guitar, sing and choose all the music for every service we have,” said Pitts.

Pitts has grown close with his father because of the experience. He is in charge of staying in contact with his dad to make sure they can coordinate the music to what he is preaching that day.

Pitts’ favorite song to play in church is “Go” by an Australian-based band named Hillsong United.

Playing music has not only brought Pitts close to his dad, but has also helped him grow his faith.

“It’s forced me to take things more seriously. As I got out of college I become more involved and started taking my faith more seriously,” said Pitts.

When Pitts first started playing guitar, he played for his youth group band and enjoyed playing rock. He admits that as he got older his taste in music changed greatly.

“My first love was always acoustic,” said Pitts.

Pitts gathers much of his inspiration from acoustic artists like Jason Mraz and Ray laMontagne. His favorite song right now is “Murder in the City” by another one of his favorite bands the Avett Brothers.

“It’s just a slow, intimate kind of song and I really dig that vibe,” said Pitts.

Outside of church, Pitts has played many shows at Cicero’s, places in the Landing, and other places around Saint Louis.

“I don’t get out as much as I did when I was in college, but I will occasionally play out,” said Pitts.

Pitts admits that he first started playing guitar to pick up chicks, and he’s happy that he stuck with it because it has helped him connect with many people, his dad, and his faith.
