When I first saw the previews for The DUFF I became super excited for the movie to come out. It looked so funny and I mean who can’t take their eyes off the cutie Robbie Amell? So when I was offered the chance to prescreen the movie I couldn’t say no. But sadly, my expectations did not match up with reality.

I’ll admit I went into the movie with pretty high hopes. It’s not everyday someone makes a movie about a girl who’s the “designated ugly fat friend” of her friend group , or DUFF as others call it. I expected it to be about a girl finding out who her real friends are and all that jazz.

Instead the movie was just like any other cliche chick flick. It was a good cliche chick flick, but you can see the ending coming from a mile away.

Although The DUFF is considered a rom-com, it wasn’t the funniest movie I’ve ever seen. The jokes weren’t very original and were somewhat repetitive. I had that “Ya, haha that was a funny moment” or “Haha I see what they did there.”

However, they did a wonderful job with the casting. Whenever I hear Bella Thorne I think of the sweet Disney girl from Shake it Up, but this role has her playing the snotty mean girl who rules the school and dates the quarterback, Robbie Amell. She definitely changed my view of her for upcoming roles.

I have not read the book, but it has been stated that the movie does not closely follow the storyline of the book. Depending on if you’re an avid fan of the book, you may or may not be a fan of the changes.

This movie definitely isn’t one of the best movies of the year, but it isn’t the most boring one either. If you’re into chick flick cliches, cute shirtless boys, and fun nights with friends, this movie is for you.
