South County Mall is a shopping mall located in South St. Louis County.. It was once a popular spot to shop and hangout with friends and family, but has now turned into a lifeless building with one of its biggest stores, Macy’s leaving.
The South Country Mall debuted on October 17, 1963, but Macy’s itself entered the store on February 1, 2006 and shut down and moved out on March 23, 2025.
The store tried to modernize the space to keep up with changing retail habits for nearly two decades. Macy’s opened a 19,600 square-foot outlet store to attract more customers. This unfortunately didn’t increase sales causing the store to shrink down to occupy only the lower level part due to rapidly declining foot traffic in the mall.
The mall struggled with smaller stores packing up and leaving the mall, slowly decreasing the amount of people coming to the mall to shop.
On January 9, 2025, Macy’s made the announcement that it would start the process of shutting down unproductive locations nationwide, and the Macy’s located at South County Mall was on the list.
Macy’s had an 8-12 week clearance sale, attempting to squeeze the last bit of life and money out of the location before they packed it up and shut it down.
On March 25, 2025, the doors were locked for good and the Macy’s location was sold for $2 million to Anchor M LLC, an entity registered to the mall’s owner. The location now has all its signs taken down and the glass is covered with paper, blocking the view from inside the store.
Big stores like Macy’s leaving could be the straw that broke the camel’s back and be the main reason for South County Mall to have a short future in the coming years.

The South County location had gone downhill ever since Macy’s acquired Famous Barr from The May Company. So sad!
