Silvia Ochoa is someone who makes a difference both in the classroom and outside of school.
She currently is a girls basketball coach at Clayton High School and is a Health teacher here at Mehlville. In addition, Ochoa also fosters dogs to help them find loving homes. Ochoa shared that she was inspired to foster dogs because she felt they needed care and support. She has been fostering dogs for nearly two years now and has helped many dogs adjust to living in a home environment.
Ochoa says that each dog comes with its own challenges, which has taught her the importance of patience and responsibility. Ochoa’s favorite part about fostering is seeing the dogs grow more comfortable and confident over time.
She believes the most important part of fostering is giving dogs a safe place where they can feel cared for and protected. Fostering also helps prepare the dogs for their future families.
Ochoa mentioned that one thing she didn’t expect before fostering was how emotionally draining it could be.
It really can affect your mental health,” Ochoa said.
Ochoa says she has learned a lot about fostering dogs and the struggles that come with it. Although it can be hard, she said, knowing the dog is going to a permanent home makes the experience rewarding.
Through being a basketball coach, health teacher and fostering dogs, Ochoa shows dedication, kindness and leadership both in the school and community.
