Most people see wrestling as a male dominated sport…until the girls show up. Three senior girls wrestlers share their thoughts on their sport and advice for prospective female wrestlers.
Senior Isabella Castillo admits there have been challenges throughout her wrestling years.
“I think one of the challenges is that we don’t have a lot of girls so it kind of takes away from my practice time. Another one is that the boys don’t think the girls can handle whenever we practiceĀ with them,” Castillo said.
Castillo’s shares her advice to younger girls considering joining wrestling.
“Advice I would give to younger girls considering joining wrestling is that nothing is permanent – always come out and try it it’s such an amazing way to connect with others you might love it; it’s nothing you have to commit to,”
Senior Hayden Shetley’s passion for wrestling was passed down by her dad.
“What drew me to the sport was my dad he was my inspiration. He told me he wrestled in high school and then we would watch a bunch of wrestling and I didn’t have a winter sport, so I decided to try it,” Shetley said.
Shetley shares her goals for the future.
“My goal is to be better far better than what I was last year because improvement is always a good thing. Another one is to make it past districtsĀ – I think making it to state would be really fun especially my senior year,” Shetley said.
Senior Bella Ordaz shares her experience from when she first joined the team.
“It was a a lot of fun when I first joined because the girls team was really small so we got really close and I made a lot of close friends. It was just something new and different because I took a break from wrestling when I was younger, so it was fun to get back into it,” Ordaz said.
Ordaz also found her passion in wrestling from her dad.
“My dad coached for a little league team and me and my two other sibling started wrestling within that program and with him being coach made it easy but also really fun to join,” Ordaz said.
These three seniors continue to work hard and devote themselves to the sport with the goal to make it to the state tournament.
