Tim Mees took over the science club in 2002. Around that time they had just started to redesign the quad.
Since then Mees has reshaped the club, making it a place to try out new science experiments and meet new people with similar interests. The club has grown into a place that encourages kids to show their creativity and teamwork outside of a classroom.
Mees tells us some of his favorite activities throughout the year are the Halloween party where he runs different demonstrations for the students. Another highlight is an upcoming event in which students plant different seeds of their choice and they watch the plant start to grow. When summer comes around the students get to take their plant home and watch it sprout.
He hopes to bring back another popular event in the future.
¨My favorite event from previous years was when we went to different nature reserves around Mehlville and took a two to three mile hike. Exposing kids to the different parts of science outside of school. I have not been able to do that in the last couple of years. Since I need another chaperone, I’m hoping to start that back up soon,¨ Mees said.
The club meets twice a month. The members usually plan out the year and the experiments within it at a specific meeting at the start of the semester. They spend one meeting doing different things around the campus and cleaning up trash outside or inside the school. Many other meetings consist of demonstrations and hands-on experiments.
